Nobody runs a canoe tour in La Jolla — the trip everyone means is a sea kayak paddle to the seven caves. Why the wrong word stuck.

La Jolla Cove Snorkeling Tour: Sea Lions & Caves review

Cove snorkel tour review
My verdict: the best-rated substantial tour here, and the one to book if you want the wildlife without the hard paddle. An hour and a half from La Jolla Cove, straight in off the beach, out past Emerald Cove and the caves. One guide is named by five separate reviewers, which tells you most of what you need to know. Note the entry bar, though: this one is genuinely priced per person, the age and weight minimums are strict, and no flotation devices are permitted at this site.

What the tour is like

Meet at the Cove, get your gear, and enter the water from the beach. Snorkel through Emerald Cove and past the cave entrances. You’re in deep water with sea lions, colorful fish, and a wide view of the reserve. Rich, the guide, is named in five separate reviews: Janice said "nothing felt rushed", Jane loved "a good pace", Cindy saw "a sea lion swooshing past" right after dunking her face in the water. The Cove has more marine life density than the Shores, and it shows.

What works

  • Showers, changing rooms, secure storage

Worth knowing

Who it’s for

Experienced swimmers age 12+ who want to snorkel in deep water with sea lions. Not for nervous swimmers or younger kids. If your group includes younger children, the Coronado tour allows age 4+ but it’s flat water with no caves or sea lions.

What reviewers praise

Rich is the star: five reviewers name him directly. Janice said "nothing felt rushed", Jane felt "a good pace", Reagan spotted "sea lions, garibaldi, a tope shark and lobsters", Jason "always felt like we were in good hands". Jennifer noted the guide offered a refund or reschedule when visibility was poor — that’s the honesty this site tracks.

What reviewers complain about

Jennifer recorded the photo-versus-reality issue: "no turtles despite the listing photo, but sea lions and plenty of fish". That’s this site’s whole purpose — calling that out. No material complaints about the operator or the experience itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is this better than the kayak-snorkel tour?

Different strengths. This one is all snorkel, no paddle, sea lions routinely, 1.5 hours, $90. The kayak-snorkel tour ($129, 2.5 hours, harder paddle). Pick this for ease and wildlife, that one for cave proximity.

Why is the age minimum 12?

The Cove has deep water and strong swimmers only. No flotation devices are allowed, which is a NOAA rule for the protected area. Younger kids can snorkel at the Shores gear rental instead.

What if it’s rough on the day I book?

Lifeguards close the Cove if conditions are unsafe. The operator will contact you to reschedule or cancel free. Check the homepage FAQ for how often that happens (hint: rarely in summer).
